Jul 01 2024 Navigating Fireworks: Tips for an Inclusive Independence Day in Alaska!
As we prepare for Independence Day celebrations, it’s important to plan ahead to ensure the experience is enjoyable for everyone, especially adults and children with special needs.
The long summer days in Alaska mean it’s still very light out in the evening on July 4th, but this doesn’t mean we don’t have any fireworks shows and celebrations throughout the state. It tends to get dark enough in most towns of Alaska to enjoy fireworks around 11:30 pm.
If you are in an area with planned fireworks shows or where people tend to have private displays, you can prepare your loved ones with special needs by taking the following steps:
1️⃣ Prepare Sensory Support: Use noise-canceling headphones or earplugs to minimize the impact of loud fireworks sounds. Even if you’re watching the fireworks from inside, provide sunglasses to minimize overstimulation from the lights.
2️⃣ Create a Safe Space: Designate a quiet area indoors ahead of time as a retreat from the noise and lights. This is especially important for those who get overstimulated easily.
3️⃣ Visual Cues: Watch online videos of fireworks or social stories to prepare for the event and explain what to expect.
4️⃣ Comfort Items: Bring comforting items like weighted blankets, a compression vest, or favorite sensory-friendly items to provide familiarity and security.
5️⃣ Stay Informed: Research the schedule for local fireworks displays to plan ahead. Unlike New Year’s, Independence Day firework celebrations tend to last a longer duration. Since the sun doesn’t set in Alaska until close to midnight on July 4th, fireworks can go off at unexpected times, especially with private parties celebrating.
6️⃣ Consider Pets and Service Animals: Fireworks can be distressing for pets and service animals. Ensure they have a safe, quiet space indoors, and consider using calming aids like anxiety wraps or soothing music to help keep them calm during the festivities.
