Haircut Tips for Sensory Sensitive Individuals

Looking to make the haircut experience less traumatic for a sensory-sensitive individual?

  • Bring your own cape or a towel with a clip to make things more comfortable. Sometimes the cape provided can be a weird texture and the velcro can be irritating.
  • Go to a kid-friendly salon.
  • Observe others get their hair cut but don’t mention the word “CUT’ while doing so, instead use the word “trim.”
  • A haircut can leave a sensory-sensitive individual uneasy for a while, so avoid scheduling an appointment before a big event or test.
  • Allow them to get absorbed into a movie, music, or snacks during the haircut.
  • You can also provide a large soft comb for them to brush off stray hairs.
  • If needed bribe the individual with something they really like as a reward for afterward.
  • Desensitize the individual’s head and neck by giving it a massage ahead of time or using a vibrating comb.
