My Story
As the owner of Hearts & Hands of Care, Inc., I would like to share my inspiration for wanting to help others.
To those who don't know me, this is my story.
At the age of sixteen, I became pregnant with my daughter Kadijah, who was born with the umbilical cord around her neck twice, causing severe brain damage and causing her to have cerebral palsy.
Kadijah is now eleven years old and has had various difficulties with her cerebral palsy. One of our recent obstacles to date was on April 13th, 2005, when Kadijah received spinal surgery for her severe case of scoliosis. She has recovered well, but still has obstacles to overcome.
I have learned many important lessons in my eleven years with Kadijah. The most important one being patience. For a young mother, whose motivation to accomplish any task the first time, and not waiting a minute over none, this was my greatest challenge. Secondly, acceptance, acceptance for the things that we are truly powerless to change.
Until Kadijah, I did not believe I would ever know the true meaning of "powerless." A side of myself I refused to see. But to watch her, not talk or walk, is to intimately know what it is to be powerless. I am eternally grateful for the gift of life, which is Kadijah. And the many, many lessons, joys and trials she has brought to my life.
To all of you, this is simply a little piece of me.
